This year’s TTSIG Workshops are as follows:

  • A10 Teaching Intercultural Competence in English (Part One)
  • Judith Mader and Rudi Camerer
  • Audience: Experienced
  • Duration: 90 min.

There is no doubt that language and culture are inextricably connected, but how many language teachers really feel qualified to teach intercultural communicative competence and use knowledge of intercultural theory in language classes? Does knowing about the findings of Hofstede and Trompenaars, being able to define low-context cultures, collectivist societies, etc. make language classes more meaningful? Most business today is conducted in English, which means that English language trainers may have a head start over intercultural trainers. The Train-the-Trainer course, which we are introducing, uses language trainers’ skills and experience,
combining these with the relevant intercultural components to show how language training can best meet the demands of intercultural communication.

We will explore these issues and provide teaching material to deal with the role of English in international business. Intercultural Competence in English (ICE) is a ‘Zertifikatslehrgang’ developed for and offered by the German Chambers of Commerce.

  • B10 Pronunciation (Please note the change!)
  • Jo Watson
  • Audience: All
  • Duration: 60 min.

This workshop is designed to dispel the myth that use of the phonemic chart is more complicated than it is worth. It is a 'hands on' workshop designed to provide participants with ideas they can adapt to their own situations in the workplace. The methodology includes TPR, pair work and group work. Along the way, hopefully, there will be fun!

  • C10 Teaching Intercultural Competence in English (Part Two)
  • Judith Mader and Rudi Camerer
  • Audience: Experienced
  • Duration: 90 min.

You are also invited to attend a question-and-answer session with this year's plenary speaker, Dr. John De Jong, from the VU University of Amsterdam, on Friday evening.
